After breakfast today, we took a taxi to the National Palace Museum. It's the largest museum in Taiwan with a lot of treasures that the Nationalist government brought over from China when Japan invaded. It was really crowded with tourists, mostly from mainland China. The most popular exhibits are jade, especially the cabbage with the katydid (cricket looking thing) and a piece of rock that looked like a piece of pork fat. We walked through the exhibits trying to duck between tour groups (some of these tourists are pushy!) We spent about 4 to 5 hours looking through everything, including the gift shop. :o) If you ever get a chance to visit the museum, don't miss the 3D animated short film showing in the children's education center. It's like a cross between Toy Story and Night at the Museum where museum artifacts come alive when the museum closes and some of them get into a little bit of trouble. Very cute! And I guess the film won some awards too.
They've got a dummy directing traffic!
For dinner, dad took us down this tiny non-descript alley to a little Japanese restaurant (Fei Chien Wu Or Hizenya in Jp), which was actually mentioned in this pamphlet we got at the airport on Taipei. They're famous for their eel rice bowls. There was a long line when we got there. Fortunately, it went pretty quickly. The staff was very efficient, getting customers seated and served quickly and out the door just about as quickly. Oh, you have to share your table with strangers. There's no such thing as empty seats at this place. They don't go as far as to break up your party, but they have parties sharing tables. I guess it means you can't really have a private conversation this way, but the place is too noisy anyway. The food was very good. We had the eel rice and some sashimi. Coming out the restaurant, hubby spotted some gal taking a picture of him. ?!?! Maybe she thought he looked like someone famous???
