We've had two full days at home now, starting our "hunkering" period. It's going pretty well, mostly. Evan got to meet one of my other sisters when she brought over some food and the other set of grandparents who brought him toys, clothes, and other goodies. It always takes a little time for him to warm up to people, but he always does. Today, we went over to the vet office, where hubby volunteers to walk the big dogs up for adoption. He has really been missing walking these big guys, Baron, Gypsy, Rascal, and Skeet. He was getting antsy. Blue is off with the other guy for the week, so he'll get to meet Evan next week. I'm not sure if we're doing "hunkering" properly since we're having Evan meet lots of people. But maybe this helps him realize that other people may come and go, but we're always with him?
We got a Joovey jogging stroller today. We took Evan along to pick it out since we weren't sure if he was going to even want to get in a stroller. As expected, he looked dubious at the stroller at first, kept shaking his head when I asked if he wanted to get in. Then I started to push it around playing with him and letting him push it too. He got a little more comfortable after a while. Joovey is one of the few brands of jogging strollers that has a higher weight limit of 75 lbs. Other ones we've looked at only went up to 45 or 50. I think Bob has a high weight limit too, but it's so expensive! Even with this stroller, Evan is almost too tall for it. But if hubby wants to walk 3-4 miles a day with the doggies, he will have to use a stroller. We tested it out right away when we took out Baron and Gypsie (after a nap, of course, very important). We took them to a park nearby. Evan enjoyed getting on the slides and swings. Everyone did pretty well. I'm not too sure if hubby will be able to handle two big dogs and the stroller, though.
We just started potty training... sort of. We got the book with sound effect to introduce the idea. We've managed to get him on the toilet twice today. Although unproductive, at least he was sitting on it. :o) The little potty seat we got to go on the toilet is actually too small for him, so I have to hold on to him while he's on there. I know I have to be more consistent with this. Maybe I have to set my watch to go off every couple of hours and make him go sit on the pot? If anybody has tips on this, I would really appreciate it.
Evan likes to have his teeth brushed. Grandma got him a Sponge Bob electric tooth brush. He made me brush his teeth twice! Then he asked to brush them again himself. Well, maybe he didn't really brush them. It was more playing than brushing. But I let him have his fun.
Bedtime is still a challenge, both at nap time and night time. It's about 11 pm now. And he just popped out of his room after being tucked in bed 2 hours ago. Hubby just put him back to bed. He's hollering a little, but he knows what he's supposed to do. Yes, we must be firm. Last night, the crying wasn't as bad as the first night, so I'm hopeful that it'll get better soon. We just snuck in his room and caught him red-handed not in bed. Hubby's the bedtime enforcer. Thank goodness it's not me.
All and all, I must give Evan kudos for adjusting so well, probably better than we are. He's put up with us fumbling and figuring out how to change diapers, give baths and showers, new sleeping arrangements, not to mention being dragged around all over the place the last week. He's been a little trooper.
Thanks, everyone, for all the comments and emails! People are actually reading my mindless ramblings?? :o) I'm SO grateful for your support and good wishes.
Way to Hunker! We'll meet Evan soon?
ReplyDeletePotty training tip: Start him out in the kitties' sand box and then work your way up to the toilet. Just kidding. Judy
ReplyDeleteYEAHHHHH!!! Glad things are going hunky dorry ;) Consistency is the key to potty training. I used to put my kids on the potty right when they woke up and also before they bathed or went to bed. Just having them sit on it while we read a book justto get them used to sitting.
ReplyDeleteBut never fear. They ALWAYS learn before they hit kindergarten ;)
do you have the book "Everyone poops?
ReplyDeletefun illustrations.
We put a small non-skid step stool in front of the toilet so Gracie could climb up and down herself. Flushing her own "projects" was the best part of course. still is.
I think you guys are doing great!
