Random Tidbits

Being one of the bigger kids in her class and familiar with some of the Montessori lessons, Emma's teachers are having her help out with the younger friends. She comes home and tells me she's so tired, so tired from working with the young friends. They make her soooo tired. I tell her, well now you know how I feel. :o)

*******

Hubby's had an ongoing ear infection for quite a while. He finally had to have a tube put in, but it's still draining. Evan asked, all wide-eyed and alarmed, "Your brain is leaking out?!!"

*******

Evan: Hup! 3, 2, 4... Hup! 3, 2, 4... Hup! 3, 2, 4...
(Something sounds off... Can't quite put my finger on it)

*******

One day, we were driving on the road on our way to school. Evan noticed that he can't put his window down.

Emma: Mama locked it (she's pretty observant although sitting diagonally behind me gives her a better angle)

Evan (all disappointed): Whhyyyy (+ whine)? Mama?

Mama: Because I don't want you guys to play with the windows or do something dangerous.

Evan: I don't promise to play with it. (he means "I promise not to play with it." He's still learning where to put the negative.)

Mama: You don't promise???

Evan: Plleeeeaaasse??

After a bit of this pleading, I agreed to unlock it with the understanding that if he or she messed with it, it's getting locked again right away. Evan was happy, but he just couldn't help himself. He couldn't help touching the button, tickling it, fingers dancing around it. Emma sitting next to him saying don't do it! But, alas, he pushed the button, and I relocked the windows. I explained that it was important to keep our promises or I would not be able to trust him next time he promises something. We'll see if he learns this lesson.

Emma, Little Miss Over-Achiever, prefers to do Evan's homework than her own. I think more to show him up than anything. She had managed to learned the multiplication table in Chinese by listening to her foster brother learn it. She has since forgotten it though. Evan and Emma are both competitive, but have not yet learned they need to put in the work in order to be better. We might have trouble down the road... Oh boy.

*******

One night, we put the knuckleheads to bed. The rule is no more talking, but sometimes there's a bit of chattering. All was quiet for a while, then all of a sudden I heard what sounded like crying. Hubby opened the door and the two were howling at the top of their lungs! Emma appeared to have a little goose egg on her forehead. After a bit of "crime scene investigation" and "suspect interrogation," best we could figure out was Emma hit Evan on the hand first, then Evan hit her back on the head causing Emma to hit her head on the bed frame, and thus we had the goose egg.

Moral #1: Don't hit anybody. They could hit back harder and it would really hurt.

Moral #2: Try to cry louder than your opponent. Maybe it'll get you out of trouble, even if only just a tiny bit less.

Baba, being the "fun one," let them take a bubble bath the other night. The knuckleheads had a blast! They laughed themselves silly putting bubbles all over the faces, not caring that it got in their eyes. Even though it was the "no tears" "mild" bubble bath, it still irritated Emma's eyes a little bit (she put it in her eye more than Evan did... oh what we do just to get a laugh).

Mama: Awww... your eyes hurt? It's best to close them and rest. Good thing it's time for bed.

It worked out!

*******

When Emma loves something, she says, "I loves it!" Like, "I looooovves mapo tofu!" (Thanks, 二姨姨!)

*******

As I had mentioned before, Emma's first English phrase was "Oh my gah" (Thanks again, Kira! ;o) ) which is still one of her favorite expressions. Another phrase she learned very early on was "I'm telling!" Apparently, "telling" is prevalent among the kids at school. I had no idea.

*******

Quite a while back, before we picked up Emma, one of Evan's favorite games was the "Put Mama to Sleep" game. He'd spread his "jin" over me while I laid on the couch or bed and bring me various stuffed animals. Sometimes he'd even try to read me a story. Then he'd say the phrase that Baba has to say every night, "No cats, no monsters, no bad guys in Evan's/Mama's room please!" It was sweet. Needless to say, this was my favorite game. Too bad they don't play it anymore. :o(

*******

Evan has trouble making and holding eye contact a lot of times. So as practice, we'd have eye contact contests at the restaurant sometimes, to see who can stare at the other person's eyeballs the longest. Who's the winner in Evan's eyes? The iPhone. He doesn't mind losing if he's got the iPhone to play with.
