A couple of months ago, I took Evan to the dentist. He had several cavities. His foster family did a great job with him, but apparently never brushed his teeth. The dentist got the nitrous oxide on him, but he struggled and fought hard! They had to bring out this padded board with velcro straps and wrap him up like a mummy. He still managed to kick off his shoes and socks. Afterwards, I asked the dentist how Evan rated on the "fight" scale. She said he's a fighter, very strong willed (have we heard that before??). We gave him lots of positive reinforcement afterwards, that he was such a brave boy for helping the dentist get the "sugar bugs" out of his mouth. We have to go back again this weekend. Not looking forward to it, but this time he's going to be unconscious. I'm bring a big bat! Just kidding. He'll be under IV sedation. And Hubby's coming along too. My arms were so sore from holding him down last time.
Evan will now try to negotiate. When we give him the "two more minutes" warning, he would say "bi" (five). Or when we give him candy or cookies (which is not often), he would ask for five. He seems to think it's a big number. I wonder when he's going to realize there are larger numbers than five. It took him 3 months to say "bus" versus "b." It took 8-9 months or so for him to stop calling fire trucks or garbage trucks choo choo trains. But we are making progress.
His preschool teacher told us that since he started speech therapy, he's starting to talk more to other kids. Not always understandable, but he's talking more. So that's a good sign. Hopefully, he'll continue that at the new school which is a montessori school. Hubby and I are both nervous and hoping that he will do well in the montessori environment. We hope he's an independent and self-motivated learner. He seems to have a curious mind, hard-headed for sure, but curious. So hopefully, the montessori way will work for him.
Life with Evan this past year has been hectic and exhausting. I was always a worrier and now there's more to worry about. This past year has aged me 5 years! Not to mention the grey hair that I don't have time to do something about because of the very cause of my grey hair. There have been fun moments here and there. And, KNOCK ON WOOD, I think he sometimes realizes that whining, fits and tantrums don't work with us. Doesn't always stop him, though. Hubby and I are a united front and don't give in to terroristic demands! Here are some of the "funner" moments.
Pirate face. Aargh!!
Super hero!! With his favorite "jin" as the cape.
Here he's trying to do a body-builder pose. I don't know who taught him this. Look at him straining, gonna pop a vein.
Urkel + Pee Wee = Evan!! Jazz hands too!! That's my boy.
I believe Urkel and Pee Wee both had their dances. Here is Evan doing his version.
At Gavin's birthday party. Anthony and Evan had a great time beating up Hubby (I think he's in there somewhere).
Blue getting a little one-on-one time with Hubby.
Sleepy boy.
Dora and Diego at the Discovery Science Center! They are Evan's newest favorites, after Team Umizoomi, of course. Look! Evan has the same head:body proportion as Diego. ;o)
Evan's a big kid, but it'll still take him a few years to fit into that hockey goal-keeper gear. Is this where Evan picked up the body-builder pose?
Hubby sitting on Dinosaur doo doo… eeewwwww…
We have to ride on the little dinosaur every time we come.
Evan did this all on his own (putting it on his arm…). I don't know where he learned that. I don't wear my purse this way.). For the record, hubby did not approve, including Mama taking a picture to document. ;o)
The Easter bunnies (ie, Ms. Pat and Mr. Alan) brought something for Evan! He's Lightning McQueen's biggest fan!! He's going to love it!!!
