Summer Fun... mostly

Hubby called me one afternoon saying there was an incident report at school today. My first thought was "Crap! What did he do?!!" Turned out some little kid decided to try and take a chunk out of Evan's arm. According to the teacher, the kids were all sitting at the table, waiting for their snack. She was closeby changing another child's diaper, when out of the blue, another kid turned and bit Evan on the arm. Evan started crying bloody murder, justifiably. Skin wasn't broken, but you could see the red upper and lower teeth marks that were starting to bruise. Ouch! It looked like a really hard bite! Hubby had to sign the incident report when he went to pick him up. By the time I got home, Evan had pretty much moved on from the incident. He was all happy and proud that he just got a piece of candy from going #2 on the potty! Not that he had forgotten about it. We gave him kisses on his booboo and lots of hugs for not knocking the daylight out of the other kid ;o) since he was bigger than most kids there. But even now, when we talked about the incident, he would crinkle up his brows and yells "NO!!" adamantly. When we first brought him home from Taiwan, he had a bit of a tendency to want to bite, scratch, hit, and pinch. We were worried that he would do something to another kid. I'm hoping that since he's been on the receiving end that he would not do that to someone else now.

Potty training is still in-progress. Knock on wood A LOT, but he has been telling us about needing to go #2 ahead of time so we've had some success the last few days. But I'm leery and would not let myself start thinking he might be getting it. I'll just let each little poop in the potty be a happy surprise. ;o) He still has some accidents for #1 at school when he forgets. The other day, he refused to go one last time at school when Hubby picked him up and ended up peeing all over himself and the bathroom just nano-seconds away from sitting down on the pot at home, just 5-10 minutes later. Hubby was frustrated. And I'm still washing soiled underwear and clothing regularly… sigh…

Aunt Karla and Cousin Shawn came out to visit from Ohio. This gave us an excuse to go to the happiest place on earth—Disneyland!! We were going to wait a while before taking him because of his tendency to throw tantrums. Hubby and I took bets on how many fits he was going to have. We thought we would be forced to leave the park by lunch… maybe by Security ;o). Surprisingly, Evan did fairly well! We got on quite a few rides early in the morning when the park wasn't as crowded. His inaugural ride was Pirate of the Caribbean. He was a little scared the first time through with just Mama (the others went on Indiana Jones, which Evan was too little for). By the second time around, he was pointing things out for Baba. He was just tall enough to get on Big Thunder Mountain Railroad, which he loved! Then after lunch, the 3 of us split off from Aunt Karla and Shawn, and just slowly meandered through the quieter part of the park, hoping he would doze off. It took a while, but it eventually worked! He napped for over an hour (Hallelujah!) right by the Mark Twain steam boat. He was so bushed that even the boat whistles didn't wake him up. And Hubby and I (mostly I) were able to enjoy a nice juicy turkey leg!! Yum yum!! We went through California Adventure in the afternoon. Evan had a great time! Got to take pictures with McQueen and Mater, dance with Phineas and Ferb, and get wet on Grizzly River Run. Overall, he only threw one big fit when we wouldn't let him get on the zip line, and a few smaller fits, or more like protests. He was wiped out by the end of the night, and so were we!

Evan is the BIGGEST flirt!! He would randomly say "Hi!" and "Bye!" with smiles and giggles to people in the stores, restaurants, etc., mostly when he's in a good mood. I don't know if this is sort of an attachment issue. We'll have to talk to our social worker when we do our post-adoption stuff.

He still loves to count, but always skips the all-important "one" and just starts with "two." He would not make a good bean-counter at the moment.

He loves all things transportation, cars, buses, trains, boats, motorcycles, tractors, semi's, bikes, etc, etc.

We sing the "ABC" song when we wash hands. He would get this big smile and tries to sing along.

He loves music. He dances and jumps along watching Yo! Gabba Gabba! (Yes, we're going to the show in November… sigh… and yes, we'll probably be wearing matching t-shirts… oh, joy)

He likes Ni Hao Kai Lan, mostly because they actually say things he could understand, especially a couple months ago when he didn't understand as much English as he does now.

He loves to play with water. We're hoping to get him back into the pool this summer… if he ever stops being kind of snotty-nosed.

I suppose he has come a long way the last few months, but when you're in it, things don't seem to be moving along as quickly. Like, when is he going to start counting from "one" and will he ever get all his colors straight?! I know, I know. Patience. We've really only been home less than 5 months. Maybe by Christmas time, he'll get the number "one???" ;o)

He was very proud of the head band he made at school. Too bad he looked like a head-injury patient.

Aaah!! Geoffery Giraffe ate Evan's head!!

We got dressed up to go see Plex and Brobee.

OC Fair! Giant corn dog (only 2/3 left in this picture) which Evan pretty much polished off all by himself.

Long way up the stairs all by his little self with a burlap bag over his shoulder. He was determined to make it up there! :o)

 The payoff!!

  1. Thanks for all the pictures! Makes me a little home sick (spent 40 years in Newport Beach- all my boys born at Hoag Hospital). My older boys were just our there last week and were at the fair. It sounds like Evan is doing great and you are settling in. I know it seems like progress is slow - sometimes I think Meghan is not getting her English fast enough- but she hasn't even been here 9 months.

  2. Mei-Lun, you are such a good writer! Love your cynical side ;). So Evan got bitten by a biter! At our old preschool, the director would make the biter bite on a lemon. Tough, eh?
